FILE FORMATS
GIF
Graphics Interchange Format - useful for animations, can be reduced in size, are transparent, animated and upload-able but they do not retain layers. They are low-resolution, 8-bit graphic file format used to create images for the web that either have up to 256 colours and/or require simple animation.
JPEG
Joint Photographic Experts Group - good for photography work, will compress the file so you can upload it onto websites. They're a compressed file format, designed to reduce file size by selectively eliminating image data.
PNG
Portable Network Graphics - Extremely good for photography work, they are high quality, high resolution. (PSD). PNG's are designed for transferring images on the internet, not for print graphics. PNG employs lossless data compression and allows for transparency to be retained.
PSD
Adobe Photoshop Document - All layers, paths and channels remain intact and editable, they are Adobe Photoshop's native file format. However, you can't upload a Photoshop document.
TIFF
Tagged Image File Format - Ideal file formatting for storing halftones and photographic images. TIFF files are preferred for print production as they use lossless compression which retains the original image quality. TIFF files are slightly smaller than s photoshop document (PSD).
